What is a health coach?

A health coach (also known as a Wellness Coach) can be defined as; ‘a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behaviour adjustments.’

A health coach works with a client to develop step-by-step plans to help them with a range of issues. These can include but aren’t limited to:

  • Implementing Self-care practices
  • Providing recipes and cooking tips to support a nutrition plan
  • Creating and maintaining and positive and healthy mindset
  • Prioritising tasks with a busy schedule
  • Stress management

Health coaching is all about having an accountability partner, someone to rely upon for encouragement and support when things seem ‘hard’.

A health coach is not a doctor. Health coaches don’t diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or recommend lower or higher doses of your current medications. They can work collaboratively with a doctor or nutritionist to support a patient, they act as a go-between support network that doctors, nurses, nutritionists and dietitians just don’t have the time for!
